Brittany, it is apparent that you have the same strong and brave heart that Sullivan Ballou had. The learning and motivation that you developed through overcoming many obstacles has caused you to commit yourself to a path of pursuing justice for those in need. You have worked to find justice for victims who have disappeared in Mexico, you have advocated for single mothers and pursued reforms in the Osseo school district, you have managed a kitchen for the homeless serving 50 lunches every day, you have done organizing work to support the Nonviolent Peaceforce. You have supported and advocated young people in many ways—by encouraging young people in St. Paul without access to park recreation centers to become civically engaged, using the lessons of sports to help close the achievement gap in Minnesota, volunteering and tutoring with first graders, helping young Spanish speakers learn English, serving as a homeroom help volunteer, and organizing day care activities.
Given your history and this long list of volunteering, it is not surprising that your advisor describes you as smart, confident, well-liked, compassionate, and not afraid to speak up for what is just. You are an ideal example of the spirit of Sulllivan Ballou in action.
Congratulations!
